Week 1 and Investigating Destinations

23/2/15

First class:

We were introduced to the brief.
Our task is to design a brochure that promotes a set of three thematically linked recreational activities in Wellington.
We brainstormed possible sets of recreational destinations or activities and relevant information that would be suitable for the project.
    Preparation for next studio
    • Research and develop three possible sets of recreational destinations or activities and relevant information.
    • When thinking of the destinations or activities within the sets ensure that each offers a different experience or emotive quality (e.g. walking tracks = bush walk + coast walk + ridge walk).
    • To help with this use the matrix template provided to outline your chosen subject matter (set), the point of difference, and adjective and three secondary communication points that are relevant to all.
    • Bring laptop to following sessions if you own one.

Second Class:

Lectorial – Process

Confirm destination / activity set:

My activity set is: Creative, collaborative spaces in Wellington.

My set is contrived of:

  • Homies Cosy Tea House
  • In Good Company
  • The Biz Dojo
Use as an opportunity to identify and discuss the mood, look and feel of the subject matter and the possible direction the design may take.

I made a brainstorm in my workbook about what I knew about these spaces and what I could find online.
I also filled out the Destination Matrix worksheet.

This helped to identify the point of difference regarding each activity, the emotive quality of the spaces and three secondary communication points.

This was further developed later through experiencing the space I hadn't previously been to (The Biz Dojo) and through photographing and sketching them.

Presentation – Content requirements / student example - covering what you need to do and how.

Presentation – The design process.

From the initial brief through to the final solution there are a vast array of objectives, tasks and techniques. The design process provides a framework to enable a designer to guide a project , giving structure to the tasks in order to achieve a communication objective and meet a deadline.

Introduction to the Process Blog component.

In addition to designing a brochure you will also be documenting your design process using Blogger.
The intent behind this is to make the design process explicit and to help you gain an understanding of your own design.
Directions of how to create your blog will be covered in the Process Blog workshop.

The criteria is covered in the pdf 'Criteria for Documenting the Design Process'.

      Preparation for next studio
      • Investigate and document chosen destinations / activities using a range of research methods including: visual, written, and experience (i.e. photograph, sketch, read, write, look, do, collect).
Represent the variety within the set.
Consider objects, details, textures, patterns, colour swatches,
      • Keep all visual material loose and / or print out photographs to a scale that can be viewed by the class. *These will be used in a workshop in the following session.
      • Begin sourcing written content – approx 100 words per destination / activity. This can be sourced directly from existing documents or websites.
      • Set up your blog site
      • Document the design process utilised to date.
      • Make sure you bring photocopy cards, pens, pencils, scissors etc to following session.

24/2/14

Investigating and visually documenting destinations using photography.

I went to Homies Cosy Teahouse and took photos.  I have previously experienced the space personally, both as a patron and as a volunteer.

I then went to In Good Company and took photos there. I have experienced this space only once before as a customer for their Christmas artwork sale. All artwork was from Wellington designers and artists. I spoke to (the girl) there about my project and she explained a little of the history and aim of In Good Company.

In Good Company, Enspiral and The Biz Dojo are three companies run by (company?) IGC is a co-working cafe and art gallery…
