Class Work and Staying Up to Date

2/3/15

Lesson 1:
Lectorial – Visual Cues.

Synthesise visual research. (ie. combine research in meaningful way)

Sort visual material into the different destinations / activities and then into relevant groupings (colours, textures, specific activity etc).
Note key similarities and differences between the destinations / activities.

From the visual research I picked a selection of images for each destination / activity that best describe the rational and emotive aspect. (These are pasted in my workbook)

Experiment with scale, cropping and orientation through pencil sketches and considered how they influence the meaning of the visual cues.
I sourced inspirational design examples /stylistic approaches that would be appropriate for the brochure, these are in my workbook, I also identified their FADPs and emotional tones.
I started to mock up some thumbnails in my work book.

Lesson 2:
Lectorial – Visual Language, Style and Aesthetic

Analysis of different stylistic approaches:

In class we discussed approaches to design and looked at design books. In groups we used pre-established adjectives to describe the images and then presented them to the class and identified their FADPs.
We referenced a selection of design books and visual resources to identify compositions and stylistic approaches that reflect the list of adjectives provided.
We then cross referenced our findings with other groups and identified common visual traits.

We looked at what elements or graphic treatment contributed to the mood of the compositions and identified stylistic approaches; c
onsidering colour, font choice, image treatment (vector, photographic, duo-tone, collage), scale, orientation etc. These  inspirational design examples. were then presented to the class by a member of the group.

I thumb nailed more brochure spreads and mocked up some ideas of grids. Indicating how the bodycopy would be incorporated into the spreads by black lines.

I continued to work on my symbols and my mood boards. These mood boards are designed to help me choose appropriate colours and patterns for my sites.

Tulia warned me they are too figurative and that I need to look beyond images and symbols and think more about patterns and abstraction.

In response to this I looked at pattern making on fabrics and textiles to see how artists used patterns to imply different things.

For example:
Homies is free, In Good Company is cheap and The Biz Dojo is expensive.
IGC is a relatively small space whereas Homies is bigger and The Biz Dojo is the biggest.

Preparation for next studio

Reflect on the findings from the previous exercise to consider the appropriateness of the stylistic approach utilised to date.

I also analysed some stylistic approaches such as brochures, collages and package design.
